  1. Stonehenge is a megalithic monument dating 
  2. from about 2000 BC on Salisbury Plain, 
  3. Wiltshire, England. It consisted originally 
  4. of a circle of 30 upright stones, their tops 
  5. linked by lintel stones to form a continuous 
  6. circle about 30m (100ft) across. Within the 
  7. circle was a horseshoe arrangement of five 
  8. trilithons (two uprights plus a lintel, set 
  9. as five separate entities), and a so-called 
  10. `altar stone', an upright pillar-on the axis 
  11. of the horseshoe at the open, North East end, 
  12. which faces in the direction of the rising 
  13. sun. It has been suggested that it served as 
  14. an observatory.
